You’ve just installed WordPress and feel overwhelmed with all the plugin recommendations you’ve found online. Before you start creating any blog content there are some things you need to ensure is done. In this post, you’ll learn What You Need to Do After You’ve Installed WordPress on your blog. Here’s a quick checklist of things you want to ensure gets prioritized before sharing your amazing content with your audience.

Change the WordPress admin name

As a default,  WordPress created an admin called admin  – original right? You want to make sure that you update this and customize it to something more secure. We all know how pesky these hackers can be.

 

Ensure that you’ve set up your site title & tagline

The website title and the tagline on your website essentially provide search engines with more information as to what your website is about. You’ll find them under Settings – General, in your WordPress dashboard.

 

Edit or update your permalinks

Take the time to update your permalink settings. This is the format in which the search engine will be able to read and understand your content to be. This can be changed within, Settings – Permalinks – Custom Struction, and choose /%postname%/ in the field. You will notice WordPress does supply you with a few options right under the custom field.

 

Upload a favicon and logo

Your website’s favicon is essentially the icon that will appear for your website across the web and on all devices. You want to ensure to update this to your blog logo this makes it easier to identify your blog. You can also create your custom logo and favicon within Photoshop or Canva. When creating your custom favicon ensure that the dimensions are 512 x 512 px. Whereas your logo differs but it can be anything from 500px wide. Your favicon can easily be updated through the WordPress dashboard.

👉 Go to the Appearance – Customize – Site Identity tab.

Get started with a WordPress theme

While you are busy customizing your website. You might want to take the opportunity to change your WordPress theme too. There are so many STUNNING WordPress templates available from Pix and Hue. Take this time to do some research on Pinterest and see what brand style you like. This will help you decide which WordPress template to purchase. These purchased themes also come with instructions on how to install your WordPress theme.

Adding categories to label your content

You’ll notice that by default WordPress categorizes your blog posts as “Uncategorized.” In case you forget to label your blog posts. Using categories makes it easier for your users to find your content.

 

Install an SEO plugin

You’ve probably heard this before! SEO helps with ranking your content on search engines like Google. So it makes sense to ensure that you have a reliable SEO plugin like YOAST SEO installed on your brand new website. YOAST SEO will help you optimize your content do an analysis on your page and check the alt tags on your images, meta description, subheadings, etc.

      It’s definitely worth it – if you are worried about having something even easier Squarespace is a brilliant choice – I know it can be daunting moving from Blogger.
