How to Get the Most Out of Your Canva Pro Subscription (9 Features Worth Using)

9 min read
Quick answer

To get the most out of a Canva Pro subscription, use the features Free doesn’t have: Brand Kit, high-quality and transparent downloads, Background Remover, Magic Expand and scheduling with Content Planner. If you’re not using any of them, you may not need Pro.

  • Set up a Brand Kit so every design starts on-brand.
  • Download at higher size and quality, and export transparent backgrounds.
  • Use the tools Free doesn’t have: Background Remover and Magic Expand.
  • Schedule from Content Planner instead of posting by hand.
  • Check what you actually use once a month, and drop Pro if it’s nothing.

Paying for Canva Pro and then using it exactly like the free version is the design equivalent of buying a gym membership for the car park. It’s a very common way to waste a subscription.

The fix isn’t more features. It’s using the handful that save you real time, and being honest about which ones you’ll never touch. Here’s how to get the most out of your Canva Pro subscription, based on what Canva says is and isn’t available on each plan.

I’ve left prices out on purpose, because they change by country and plan. Check Canva’s plans page for what you’d pay.

9 Ways to Get the Most Out of Your Canva Pro Subscription

Start with the features that remove a step you already do by hand.

1. Set Up Your Brand Kit

Brand Kit is available on Pro, not Canva Free, and Pro lets you save multiple Brand Kits. You can store logos, colours, fonts, brand voice and other brand assets. In a design, open Brand in the editor, choose your kit, and add a logo, a font or a colour theme. Or select the page background, then Styles, to apply your brand text styles in one go.

2. Download at Higher Quality

On paid plans you can increase the size and quality of JPG and PNG downloads to the highest settings, and download your design as a PNG for social media and text. Canva’s guide to blurry downloads explains the rest.

3. Export Transparent Backgrounds

Downloading with a transparent background is available on Pro, Teams, Business, Education and Nonprofits plans. Set the background to white or delete it, then choose PNG and turn on Transparent background. It’s the quickest way to get a logo that sits cleanly on any page. See Canva’s Help Center for the full steps.

4. Remove Photo Backgrounds

Background Remover removes the background from an image or video. Select the image in the editor and choose BG Remover. It’s available on Pro, not Free, and it’s handy for product shots, cut-out headshots and stickers.

5. Extend Photos With Magic Expand

Magic Expand extends a photo beyond its edges, so a vertical shot can become a horizontal one. It’s available with Pro and other eligible plans, not Free.

6. Schedule From Content Planner

Content Planner lets you schedule a design to a connected social account straight from Canva. Scheduling is available on Pro, Pro Lite, Business, Teams, Enterprise, Education and Nonprofit plans, and Canva schedules one design to one account as one post.

7. Use the Premium Content Filter

When you search for photos, select Show filters and use the Price filter to choose Free or Pro. A crown icon marks Pro or other premium content, so you can see what’s included at a glance.

8. Upscale Low-Resolution Photos

Upscale makes blurry or pixelated JPG and PNG images sharper. It’s a Standard AI tool available on Free and paid plans. On paid plans it doesn’t draw from your monthly AI allowance, while on Free each use does.

9. Spend Your AI Allowance Wisely

Canva’s AI tools share a monthly allowance. On paid plans, Standard AI tools like Magic Write don’t count towards it, while Premium and Ultra tools do. Canva Pro includes up to 200 uses of Premium tools, or up to 20 uses of Ultra tools, and Canva Free includes up to 20 uses of Standard or Premium tools. Canva says these figures are estimates for simple tasks and the details can change, so check Canva’s AI access page for your plan.

Canva Pro Subscription Mistakes to Avoid

Most wasted subscriptions come from one of these mistakes.

  • Never setting up a Brand Kit: it’s the most useful Pro feature for most creators.
  • Downloading JPGs by default: use PNG for social and text.
  • Forgetting the licence: check Canva’s licence before using Pro content in logos or products.
  • Ignoring the AI allowance: Premium and Ultra tools use it faster than you’d think.
  • Paying for features you don’t use: review it monthly.
