What is retinol?
Retinol, also known as vitamin A₁-alcohol, is a vitamin in the vitamin A family found in food and used as a dietary supplement. As a supplement it is ingested to treat and prevent vitamin A deficiency, especially that which results in xerophthalmia.
Retinol benefits
Applying vitamin A topically in the form of retinol can include the following benefits:
- Prevent wrinkles due to its minimizing effect, as well as smooth out existing fine lines and wrinkles.
- Brighten dull skin by exfoliating at a cellular level, which results in a brighter and smoother new skin.
- Regulate oily skin and minimize breakouts.
- Fade dark age spots, sun spots and hyperpigmentation and even out complexion over time.
Retinol side effects
Since retinol is such a powerful ingredient, it can cause the skin to redden or peel if it’s incorporated into a skincare regimen too quickly or used too often. Flakiness, dryness and even some breakouts can occur when retinol is first added to a routine. Typically, it just takes a little time for the skin to adjust. It is advised to wait at least 20 – 30 minutes before applying additional products on your skin.
I have been incorporating retinol in my nighttime skincare routine and have noticed a difference in the appearance of my skin. Retinol has been part of my skincare regime for a few now. Not sure what products to try?

Great post! I have used retinol before and haven’t seen huge benefits or side effects. I have only tried an Ole Henriksen retinol serum though, but I have the Pixi Beauty jasmine retinol serum!

I haven’t tried retinol yet, however after reading about its benefits I’m considering it. Thanks for the helpful tips!
Retinoids are gold star hands down but we also have to realise that not everyone will peel or feel irritation its a very subjective thing as ive been using retinoids for years now and ive never peeled and im using tretinoin

I adore retinoids, they’re the only real anti ageing skincare I feel work so well.
