Canva Magic Studio: What’s Included, What’s Free and How to Use It

8 min read
Quick answer

Canva Magic Studio is Canva’s collection of AI-powered creative tools, including Magic Design, Magic Write, Magic Edit, Magic Eraser, Magic Grab, Magic Switch, Magic Animate, Magic Media and Magic Morph. What you can use depends on your plan: Canva Free includes a small AI allowance, and Pro adds a bigger shared monthly allowance plus unlimited use of Standard tools.

  • Design: Magic Design builds a design from a short description.
  • Photos: Magic Eraser, Magic Edit and Magic Grab change what’s in a photo.
  • Resize and translate: Magic Switch changes a design’s size or language.
  • Create and animate: Magic Media, Magic Animate and Magic Morph.
  • Check your plan: access and limits depend on Free, Pro or a team plan.

Canva’s AI tools have been renamed, moved and reshuffled so often that it’s hard to know what’s still there, what’s free and what’s worth your time. This guide cuts through it.

Here’s what Canva Magic Studio includes, where to find each tool, how Canva’s AI allowance works on Free and Pro and the licence checks to make before you publish AI-made graphics on your blog.

What Is Canva Magic Studio?

Magic Studio is Canva’s name for its collection of AI-powered creative tools.

Canva describes AI tools as design helpers: some help you make a design, some edit photos, some write text and some animate or resize. Canva’s feature names and menus change, so use this guide as a map and check the Canva menu for what you see on your own account.

Canva Magic Studio Tools and Where to Find Them

Most tools live in the editor, on the photo toolbar, or under Canva AI on the homepage.

ToolWhat it doesWhere to find it
Magic DesignTurns a short description into a designCanva AI on the homepage
Magic WriteDrafts text from a promptCreate, For you, then Quick actions
Magic MediaCreates images or videos from a promptApps, then Magic Media
Magic EditChanges part of a photo from a text promptSelect a photo, Edit photo, Magic Edit
Magic EraserRemoves unwanted parts of a photoSelect a photo, Edit photo, Magic Eraser

Magic AnimateAdds coordinated animationsAnimate, then Magic Animate
Magic MorphTurns text into textured artwork from a promptAsk Canva (see our Magic Morph guide)

Menu names can vary slightly by design type and editor view, so if a button is missing, look in the toolbar for the closest match.

Canva Magic Studio Free vs Pro: What Do You Get?

Canva Free gives you a small AI allowance, and Pro gives you far more.

According to Canva’s AI usage guide, the allowance works like this:

  • Canva Free: up to 20 uses of Standard or Premium AI tools in total, and no access to Ultra AI tools.
  • Canva Pro: Standard AI tools don’t draw from your allowance, though fair use limits apply. You also get a shared allowance of up to 200 uses of Premium tools or up to 20 uses of Ultra tools.
  • Not all uses are equal: advanced tools and complicated prompts use more of your allowance, so you’ll usually land at the lower end of those numbers.
  • Resets: paid plans reset on your billing date each month, and Free resets at the start of each month.

Some tools you may want are Pro only. Background removal through Canva AI is on paid plans, and Magic Expand needs Pro. To check your own allowance, open your profile menu, then Settings, then Billing. The tracker shows the percentage used, not an exact number.

Individual tools can also have their own limits, and plans change, so check the plan comparison on Canva’s pricing page before you build a workflow around one tool.

AI in Canva is a shortcut, not a strategy. Use it where it saves you time and keep your own voice on top.

Which Canva Magic Studio Tools Are Worth Using as a Blogger?

Start with the tools that save you repeated work.

  • Magic Switch: resize one pin or graphic for another format instead of rebuilding it.
  • Magic Eraser and Magic Grab: tidy a stock photo or reposition a subject for a featured image.
  • Magic Write: draft a first version of a social caption or a content plan, then rewrite it in your own words.
  • Magic Morph: one standout word of text on a pin, not your whole blog graphic.
  • Magic Design: a quick starting layout when you’re stuck on a blank page.

Tools that create images or videos from prompts can be fun, but make sure the result matches your brand and that you’ve checked the licence.

Can You Use Canva AI Content Commercially?

Check Canva’s terms before you publish, because the rules depend on what you made.

Canva says AI-generated content isn’t automatically yours to use without restrictions, and the rules depend on what you generated and whether your design also contains Canva library content. Read Canva’s AI Product Terms, and note a few points:

  • Pro content from Canva’s library must be used in a design, not on its own.
  • If you use a third-party AI app inside Canva, check that app’s own terms.
  • AI-generated audio has separate restrictions: you can’t sell or license it as a standalone product.
  • Canva’s AI terms prohibit misleading people into thinking AI-generated content is human-made, so be honest about it.

I’m not a lawyer, so if you plan to sell something made with AI, read the terms in full.

Canva Magic Studio Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using AI for everything: your blog needs your voice and your examples.
  • Ignoring your allowance: advanced tools use more of it, so spend it on jobs that matter.
  • Skipping the licence check: read the AI terms before you sell or publish AI-made assets.
  • Publishing the first result: edit it so it looks like your brand.
  • Expecting every tool on Free: check your plan before you build a workflow around one.
